5 Things to Do Before Saying Goodbye to 2016
As we prepare to say goodbye to 2016, I am often asked by my clients to provide them with a list of things they should be doing or thinking about as they embark on the uncertainty of a new year. Before I give you the 5 things to do before saying goodbye to 2016, let's review how 2016 will be remembered by many.
For some, 2016 represents a year of loss and setbacks with the passing of mega entertainers who changed the landscape of the industry like Prince, Mohamed Ali, and David Bowie, no one can argue that the three of them left a mark on society and world. Then, there are those who are still walking in amazement and bewilderment at this year's presidential campaign and results. Let me say up front; this post is not to take sides but to simply point out that it was unlike any other election in modern history.
It goes to show you that as the boxing promoter Don King often says, "Only in America." So, as you can see, 2016 can be viewed as a year of uncertain complexities. Yes, we mourned the loss of our favorite entertainers, cheered at the courage displayed by our Olympians as they brought home 46 gold medals during the Olympics in Brazil. Watched in horror as the nightly news showed images of 49 lifeless bodies carried out of a Florida nightclub due to the sick terrorist action that robbed those looking to enjoy life have it abruptly taken for them. I'm continuing to pray for the families who lose a loved one to senseless violence this year.
This is a perfect segue into the 5 things to do before saying goodbye to 2016.
. Forgive and don't hold resentments. Carrie Fisher from my favorite movie series Star Wars gave, in my opinion, the best explanation of why forgiveness and not holding resentment is so important to the healing process. She stated, “Resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die. ”
2. 7 minutes a day in reflection. As you begin to close out 2016, pull out a sheet of paper and write down 12 things (one for each month) of some things you accomplished during that month. Regardless of how small you think it is, write it down and reflect on how you felt and what impact it had on your life and or the life of those around you?
3. Pay if forward. My business partner, Dawn Fobbs has a wonderful tradition that she does every year and I have adopted it myself as well. We will go the drive through and pay for our meal and the meal of the car hind us as our way of sharing our wealth and prosperity with others. I will also sponsor a children's trip or do something to pay it forward. Now you may ask, what's the benefit? I believe that the universe (God) or karma will reward us for what we do for others, especially when it's done to bless someone else. When we bless others with our treasures, it opens up room for us to be blessed. My mentor and pastor, Dr. T.L. Martin says, I'm blessed to be a blessing."
4. Get Focused and Refocus.
Being a Focused Achievement Coach, I get to work with clients who have gotten distracted by the bombardment of information, both online and offline through 24 news shows that broadcast majority of negative information that as Actor Denzel Washington said in a recent interview, "If you don't read the newspaper, you're uninformed. If you do read it, you're misinformed,"
This is what happens when our focus is blurred by distractions. What used to be clear has become blurred, and we need to refocus our sights, and this often means removing debris from the lenses or adjusting our focus to see better. As you close out the year, look around your office and home to identify areas that you need to give focus to, such as organizing your desk, spending time with your partner, taking a vacation or simply taking time for yourself. 5. Develop a Morning Ritual. Perhaps one of my biggest accomplishment in life came as a result of developing a consistent morning ritual. Rituals or habits are important because we all have them. The real question, "How effective are your current habits or rituals?" For the past two years, I have consistently followed a morning ritual that has opened up so many door and opportunities that I know would not have happened without these rituals.
