Take a good look at your desk. Is it organized? Is everything you need within reach? Can you even find anything? If you said no more than you said yes and you want to change that, here are a few tips to keep your workspace from becoming a total mess: Dedicate More Time to Workplace Organization Like anything, mastering organization techniques for work takes practice. Cleaning your workspace shouldn’t take you too long. In fact, 10–15 minutes should be enough (unless, of course, you especially like to take your sweet time uncluttering things). This is also where your self-discipline comes in as you must be conscious of managing your time well enough to squeeze in tidying up your desk. Get Rid of the Things You Don’t Need Go through your things to determine what you need and what you don’t, and get rid of the things that you don’t use anymore. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you should go and throw these things away if you think you’ll need them in the future, but while you aren’t using them, you can put them in a storage box that can go under your desk. If you’ve overlooked this, your workspace may have become an overwhelming mess by now—photocopies and printouts here and there and your keyboard placed on top of folders and books you no longer remember using. Everything in Its Place You can’t just keep on stacking paperwork up into towering heaps on your desk. It’s hard to find what you need in that mess. Storage materials such as boxes, filers, binders, portable shelves, and drawers are only some of the many tools for organization at work that you should definitely utilize. Also, in determining how you will be placing your things, it’s best to remember to keep only what you need close to you. This decreases the clutter on your desk, helps you remember where your things are, and prevents you from having to turn your desk upside down when you need something. Maintenance Don’t leave work for the day with your desk in disarray. When your shift’s over and it’s time to go home, give a bit of your time to tidying up your space. If you don’t, chances are when your cluttered desk greets you the next day, you lose your motivation and your stress levels increase. So never leave a messy workspace. Motivation Most importantly, give yourself a good reason for following these steps. Why should you keep your workplace organized? Is it to look good to your colleagues and impress the boss? Or is it so you can stay productive and efficient? Your workplace is practically an extension of you as it reflects the way you handle your work and the stress that comes with it. If your workplace is a mess, it might tell other people that you’re letting stress get to you and that you’re easily distracted and irritated. A clean desk can help you focus, give you more space to work, and keep you calm in the face of pressure. Also, remember that organizing your workspace can serve as a breather from your heavy workload. It gives your brain a rest and can effectively relieve stress. Your reason for maintaining your workspace clean and tidy at all times must be directly linked to your goal of being a productive and focused worker. With this motivation, you’ll be able to be consistent in your commitment of being more organized at work.
